Region-wide dog access rules that include:

decisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation
4 G, d2 d' u- n9 o- b9 Wand Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
4 B1 {' }3 N- W1 D3 nchanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the
! I& D3 Z0 Y1 q( T2 inew decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
6 @1 a# l4 o. K8 {- \( Z0 m5 zOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
( p# x& `* i$ d5 M+ Dbe used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to7 o7 T7 m! U8 P! }; k# c4 ]
adopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,
4 [2 \, q( ~- h; l6 |and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier
* I# R! P: o/ o5 }Island).! U" s+ V$ F$ [9 _5 t2 _( v
However, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
! J" ?+ ^ `2 N+ b- I4 E: `local boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the
0 g, x, n5 g; Emost appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer. N( p8 H5 [) K. P
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under, l6 K; U5 k5 W$ k }
control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to* s( u& U/ ?8 h
manage the safe interaction between people and dogs means that until those decisions are made
