A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access
7 a9 t5 A- X; T- c; `* zdecisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation' l H( a. u6 e& p; y+ k3 @
and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting5 r3 H7 q$ E. Z
changes to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the B7 t3 X" l# [! h2 q9 V& l, \7 a
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.! T7 Z$ n& g" O( q5 p8 l1 z, d7 G
One of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to2 M- D! V4 L4 f! T5 y1 Y3 G+ h' d
be used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to
/ H$ ~ u5 q5 {adopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,; o+ v% g) q0 Y* h
and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier, _5 l2 N0 |+ S/ ?

However, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
$ V! O/ A' G/ F' D3 {9 _7 ?2 s% nlocal boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the
) k" P( T/ A2 u _6 kmost appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer8 D- U/ b) b/ c; D: O" \
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under
/ v% e/ C) ?9 N( E( Tcontrol off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to

the current dog access rules (which use a mixture of times and dates across Auckland) will

conducted by the relevant delegated authority before a final decision is made. |
