A mother-of-six left with serious head injuries after stepping in to stop a bag snatcher is recovering but she has a long road ahead, says her husband.
Lucy Knight, 43, went to the aid of an elderly Asian woman whose bag was allegedly being snatched at Northcote Countdown on Auckland's North Shore on Tuesday afternoon.
She suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain but was able to manage a few words on Thursday, her husband Peter Thomas said in a statement on Friday.
"We are heartened by this progress."
The family has received almost $200,000 in donations from the wider community, and Mr Thomas said the family were hugely appreciative of the tremendous support and love.
"We are humbled by the generosity we are experiencing which will help Lucy in the long road ahead."
The money will go to covering basic things like groceries, parking and petrol while Ms Knight recovers from her brain injury.
Two of Ms Knight's children, aged two and four, saw the attack but were uninjured.
Hendrix Hauwai, 17, has been charged with aggravated wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to rob and is due to reappear in the North Shore District Court on Friday afternoon.
He was kept in custody over night but was segregated from other prisoners |
