Calling all treasure hunters and sand trawlers - the chance to find hidden prizes at the annual Himatangi Beach Big Dig is coming up this weekend.
Himatangi's coastal community residents will line up alongside day visitors and holidaymakers to dig for buried beach booty on Saturday.
The annual fundraising event, sponsored by More FM and Mitre 10 Mega, helps raise money for the Palmerston North Surf Life Saving Club.
More than 100 tags, corresponding with prizes, have been tucked away in the sand, and diggers will have to race thousands of other hunters.
One coveted tag will earn its finder the grand prize of three-piece outdoor furniture, worth about $1300.
But, if you don't draw the table and chairs combo, there are plenty of other goodie bags up for grabs.
Palmerston North Surf Life Saving Club president Con Fraser said it was a fun day at the beach and he was encouraging people to bring their buckets, spades and sunscreen to get behind the cause.
"If it's a nice day, it'll be the best day at the beach . . . and the extra money raised will help top off our fundraising efforts."
The surf lifesaving club announced yesterday it had raised almost $1 million to help raze and rebuild the clubhouse built in 1959..
Mr Fraser has been involved in the fundraising event for more than 40 years, but has never had the chance to hunt himself.
"I place the tags in the sand and know where they're all hidden, so I can't dig."
The big dig gets under way at 1pm and costs $3 per digger。 |
