New Zealand Olympics team ‘a total joke’
By mkilpatr | The Armchair Athlete – 5 hours ago
Two small countries I'm proud to be associated with - New Zealand and Scotland - have had hugely successful Olympic Games.
Scotland competes under the banner of Great Britain, so you may have missed the multiple medals the Scots have taken.
But no-one can downplay the impact of our Kiwi sportsmen and women, despite the occasional disappointment at some results.
Well no-one apart from a bitter old journalist from the United Kingdom who seems to have taken to trolling to get noticed, that is.
That's right, folks, our favourite New Zealand obsessed journalist is at it again, this time taking a pop at our performance in London.
Not content with bashing the best rugby side in the world and former coach, Times journalist Stephen Jones has taken to attacking our Olympians' effort on Twitter.
Here's a selection of Jones at his Kiwi-baiting 'best' today:
Great news for NZs Olympic non-performance. They get half a bronze medal in the cycling.
... and your team is a total joke. So much for the land of the great outdoors. Gives real sports nations a laugh though

NZ classic! NZ paper claims that since they have low population they are per capita havin great Games. So ultimate loser excuse found!
that is the all time, classic, bleeding heart rubbish statistic of the terminal loser
By NZ's desperate excuse standards of low population I make Isle of Muck rugby champions of the World
So not content with New zealand's performance being impressive despite our low population - a statistic that originated in Great Britain at that - he then turns his attention to todays events:
btw your 'athlete' in the Triathlon just finished
and just to rub salt in the woods he tweeted valiant Nick Willis, who finished ninth in the 1500m final this morning with:
we will let you know when he finishes
I think Kiwis can take a joke and a bit of banter. But the irony of a sports journalist tweeting one of our Olympians who has just finished a final at the Olympic games is off the chart.
And it's pretty clear that Jones may struggle to complete a triathlon of walking up the stairs at Eden Park, picking up his free food and then walking to the media box without having a pop at New Zealand.
Still, if there's any solace to be had it's that we're not the only ones to think Jones isn't up to much - former England rugby star Matt Dawson lambasted him for his tabloid-like taking of England to task ahead of last year's Rugby World Cup.
Here's Dawson's message:
Steve Jones giving Shontayne Hape 1/10 in Times. Ur a joke Jones! Total disrespect for a professional sportsman trying to do his job!
Ignore the first sentence and the rest seems oddly prescient. In internet terms Jones has become what many would term a 'troll'.
That means it may be time for us to ignore him completely. What do you think?
Should we ignore Jones? Does it matter what people think of us? Or should we continue to fight back against his bitterness? |
