Fisher, be the bigger man, this issue has been around for so long.
BCom vs. BBIM, you can't compare the two, it's as simple as that. Commerce is a very broad area, same as IT. I do BBIM because I lived closed to Tamaki previously (still rather close to City) and the fact that I have Infomgmt as an interest. I'm still graduating as an Accounting Major, and applied to do my 4th year, in order to satisfy requirements for NZICA. This is the same case with any BCom student, we all need that 4th year, and do the same stuff. All BBIM did was disallow the option of choosing extra elective papers, and have us focus on another major.
As for IT being a shortage, again, that's completely false. I currently know quite a few people in 神州數碼, and also a group of highly qualified IT professionals who work with them and currently 建設銀行, and I can tell you that currently in the financial sector (which so happens involves all aspects of Commerce, and also a very large amount of IT/business knowledge) in China is booming. They are currently in phase 1 of setting up the backend, and it's a great opportunity for any COMPSCI and INFOSYS majors. It's already been predicted that in 2 - 5 years, the sector for Data Analysis will be most needed, which again is where both Commerce and BBIM comes in. After showing the project team what I have done, they agree that having that extra bit of knowledge will give us that slight edge over others.
As for graduates returning to China, they're looking to train people up, and if you can afford to add that something extra to your CV, it's better than not having it.
At the end of the day, I'm a BBIM grad in a semester, I don't hate BCom because the 2 are different. The same degree is offered in Germany and Norway (I spoke to exchange students during TA training), and it's been a success over there. UoA is just not playing its card rights, and put that together with the lack of correct information and mis-informed people, you have a royal pissing contest just like this one. |
