What about requests for changes to dog access rules on specific parks and beaches, and# r$ I5 F" f8 S

A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access/ e0 x! K( _1 }; I" J* S
decisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation
, n N% l( U7 i% P5 Gand Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
, f( b9 U9 n9 Z, {1 wchanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the2 M$ _' g" y4 ~% Z
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
7 c: ~( x( ?' f/ J- V' hOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
J G' l* V, }( y' F4 z3 ]be used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to# ]" K. a) S+ f0 ^' U, s& x( `
adopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,* w5 J) B( f, @
and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier; o6 y9 n* k6 B
Island).
- ?) h% E. o- w+ vHowever, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
- N, w8 Q' Z, Ylocal boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the8 F0 d' [6 s0 ] h' Y3 u: [
most appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer" U+ J, w# O) x+ X
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under" w: S7 @4 S% n: w5 w
control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to

conducted by the relevant delegated authority before a final decision is made. |
