A focus on responsible dog ownership, dog welfare, community education, dog safe access to
/ R; E# P) p$ Apublic places, registration, and dog safe communities.
* D+ g v6 t* [! W( C+ w Ability for local boards to decide dog access rules on local parks and local beaches.: e! `- C O' z$ n; Z j! _
Region-wide dog access rules that include:7 Z# Q4 M& i' }, r$ @, C+ C6 @: v: Y
o Allowing dogs under control on a leash on footpaths, town centres, car parks, boating! R8 D7 ?+ ]+ n% L
areas, shared driveways, and in the vicinity of playgrounds and sports surfaces when in

What about requests for changes to dog access rules on specific parks and beaches, and

. A6 s3 `! a$ _; G `$ ~A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access% ?. I( \" @% _* Y) ^* F
decisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation% j7 `7 v6 s2 E, j6 d$ w
and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
6 K% T0 \' c5 q( v% fchanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the' X x5 v1 ^6 Z7 m3 W) W
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
- X* ]9 E+ d0 u4 {* r# oOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to; h6 A) N E7 r1 g
be used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to
, r" x+ c4 b; uadopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,. A! h# k! F) b
and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier# _1 I: i+ c: ?, o5 M# ~2 \
Island).
$ g; N. _7 v; N$ D; qHowever, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and$ [2 m6 i- R8 Y% K" M
local boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the
# X O8 R, _8 M3 r: {7 omost appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer: f) g- i' D7 f2 Y9 V/ Q Y" y" E* j
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under
