Dog access rules on regional parks and associated beach and foreshore areas aligned to

Region-wide rules requiring immediate picking up and appropriate disposal of dog faeces,

Compliance and enforcement activity that focuses on dog registration, seizure and holding of3 {. h4 b3 U7 n+ l8 j: ?4 U/ C
dogs that are a threat to public safety, classification of dangerous and menacing dogs, and desexing/ m8 h: Q6 ~/ O
dangerous, menacing and uncontrolled dogs.% X4 x8 ]) c& H0 h! `0 E
What about requests for changes to dog access rules on specific parks and beaches, and

A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access
1 s$ C, E3 b2 u# u% R, Q) T! Pdecisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation: n- y' @( [4 K
and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
/ h S5 Z. b" j& m+ y1 v, Dchanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the/ h$ ]; f8 } ]; Y# y
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
% o4 K+ U8 T/ v3 l+ _5 LOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
- z2 P: ~ p" r+ F5 Y4 s: T/ K* zbe used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to
; a9 Y, ?, f* a! v0 Ladopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,
( {& N* S% ` g" \, sand to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier
/ O8 I7 K0 ^; q2 J0 B* zIsland).
+ C! U }5 l; M6 i% IHowever, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
# }- ~, L. g: d1 e+ _local boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the
6 Q1 V" s# U. c/ o' \4 umost appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer( Z6 g2 e, ~8 q: V( [9 n4 w3 B
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under' |" Y1 Y! T+ w: b: x; Q" O" h9 x
control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to) ^9 t# ~1 ~; |) C6 j+ g, f
manage the safe interaction between people and dogs means that until those decisions are made

2013. Any proposed changes will be publicly notified for submissions, and hearings will be
