在此求问各位前辈大大， 新西兰目前IT行业现状和前景怎样？奥大software engineering水平如何？

I am developing projects in tcp/ip network stack code linux c/c++.

I have ibm x3650 m2 2 core l5630 16 virtual cpu 48gb ram, ibm x3650 m3 2 core l5620 24 virtual cpu 48gb ram, supermicro 2 core e5620 16 virtual cpu 40gb ram servers at home with i7 4770k 32gb ram desktop all of them install ubuntu, fedora latest linux and mac pro 32gb ram desktop :-)

I started my job as software engineer in Visual C++ MFC in 1994 and I have around 21 years programming experience including 17 years working in Auckland, New Zealand as software engineer. I graduated from Shanghai University of Sicence and Technology and major in computer science. :-)

from what i can (talking to HR and other hiring manager), the demand for software developer is ever increasing (it's at the point that companies are fighting for graduate developers and not just senior developers now).

Saying that, i will suggest that you go with your heart, and pick a field that interest you the most. Think about whether sitting in office 8 hours a day, in front of computer screen doing coding is what you want to do for life or not. Reality is, you will only be good at something you are interested in.

disclaimer: i work in IT, but not software development side. I do have 17+ years IT working experience on my back

It is not true.

If it is true, we will see job ads salary offer for senior developer to nzd300k per year as permanent employee. But it never happens. The salary offer for senior developer reach to 120k and that is the ceiling.
I heard that real estate agent can earn 1 million nz dollar easily a year in north shore, auckland. They are just our neighbours.

i must repeat it again, for joe public, $120k per annum is considered high income earner. sure, it can't compare to real estate agent, or lawyer, or doctors etc.

Compare to country's median pay, many people will be dead keen wanting a $120k job though (and obviously for super wealthy people, getting $120k/annum is nothing).

$120k/annum sounds like a lot of money to me pay wise (which indicate to me IT is still an industry worth getting into).

You might say that I am not hot demand skill. The company I provide my programming service includes Fletcher Building, apl, nalco and some Australian famous brand which I cannot provide name for privacy reason.
Here is a list of programming languages I programmed

asp.net mvc c#/vb.net
java j2ee
javascript/angularjs/jquery
gnu c/c++ linux
visual C++ MFC 2.0
delphi
x86 assembly language
sap abap
cobolsql/MSSQL stored procedure
microsoft sql server, oracle sql server, sybase sql server, mysql

I am good at solving bussiness problem for customers and design scalable/fast solution :-)

I am telling you, there's a ceiling staying technical in NZ (most struggle to get 6 figures, $120k is almost the industry ceiling top technical people get to).

If you want to get further (career or pay wise), you need to either:
- switch into solution architecture/design/consultant (which is possible to get to $150k)
- switch into management (which is possible to get to $150k+).

Obviously to get into either, it's not about how technical you are anymore, but rather how connected you are to the industry, how indispensable you are to the business.If you are willing to take on additional responsibility, and deal with additional shit/politic/people problem, you should make the jump.

note: you should join the IT wechat group that a local guy created, there are tonnes of developers there that only have 5+ years experience, and sounds to me that many of them are hitting $100k-$120k salary already.

120K？十多年前就是这个价了。这么多年啥都涨，房子有三四倍了，Groceries也起码两倍了，人工居然一点都不涨？

It is easier to open own business than that. It takes lots of effort/bullshirt to get into dev manager job just increase from 120k to 150k.
I would rather buy an investment house(maybe multiple) to increase the income. It is so easy. The bank gave me a pre-approval loan $1,000,000 one year ago. :-) Of course the loan offer expired now.

My 5 cents on this topic:

Both majors are really good and have bright future - but you have to love what you do.
Which major do you enjoy more? Are you exited when you figure out a coding problem? Do you feel if.. else, while and for loops (even recursive functions - once you understand how they work) are naturally easy to understand and it takes you little or no time to pick up the pattern and apply to problem solving?

If so, you're a nature programmer and you will be absolutely a fine software engineer.

Can't speak for civil engineering as I'm a software engineer myself. Someone from a civil engineering background might want to shad some light.

By the way, don't ever believe it when someone tells you 'xxx is the ceiling and you can never get more than xxx'. It's completely crap.

So you actually paid more than xxx as a software engineer, or you paid some one more than xxx as a software engineer, or you saw someone paid xxx?

你说的这种只是个例，每个公司的顶梁柱类型的工程师都能比市场价拿的高，道理很简单，公司很难replace这样的人所以宁愿出高价留住他，但是这不代表着个人到别的地方能拿同样的工资，往往这样的人去别的公司80%的chance都拿不到比他现在高的工资所以这也是他们不愿意走（或者走不了）的原因。

但是对于average joe programmer来说，120k就是permanent role市场的ceiling，起码目前是。

I think Australia got rich from mining due to China. But now China is in cycle,  Australia mining industry is going down the hill and got lots of people redundant. How they can continue to pay salary starting from A$120,000? That must be insane. I simply cannot understand what you said.
