A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access

and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting' h/ X3 _) S% M/ m1 w
changes to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the
( @! P7 B& o2 J1 ]! Anew decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
, T8 O4 d5 f3 E! ]( \) kOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
a4 @( r+ R$ I8 ibe used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to6 h; Z5 E% L0 z& r2 u' i
adopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,
, v8 j9 |+ [1 h& s3 U, iand to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier/ }! K+ `9 g9 V6 e" w
Island).8 W" v( Q: h6 g! e& W6 e
However, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
$ u2 ~/ s* ~' X ]0 [( u% h- ulocal boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the4 L) X- t" C9 M$ F7 H' S1 ?) I- Q
most appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer
8 o& g( ^2 s+ v! s% G# |3 S1 Ntimes and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under
% k7 I4 \' y0 f+ Z2 }* Z6 ycontrol off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to: t' ]* B6 K8 W& y9 ]8 h7 z
manage the safe interaction between people and dogs means that until those decisions are made

conducted by the relevant delegated authority before a final decision is made. |
