9 Y" l' |* K# _4 u. V S7 \$ P% {- XA new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access
9 \1 m# S$ V) W2 b; u0 @/ tdecisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation- S8 O b) `0 V& T( }
and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
; h$ {* M' B3 a B& \! B! Achanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the& y) W. C! z/ v! n6 x2 a- U
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
! D! x" V) n0 }+ qOne of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
7 m" J8 j8 M/ u9 P3 Wbe used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to
! m/ S1 m h8 P; F! {! K: J9 jadopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,
+ t8 [( W1 N) e0 T7 V* aand to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier1 L$ M5 C' L& Z- @# B
Island).
# U; H$ E" N1 f. \" D& p: O BHowever, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and" n T; H- M- ~9 J" L5 K
local boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the8 K! n" w) ]& [( m3 D
most appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer( x$ I* R0 B- V) _- o4 ~
times and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under6 H% u3 T1 R$ }6 v; ^+ I
control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to$ i$ I/ }, Z( Z& x: [/ [# ]2 Y& o
manage the safe interaction between people and dogs means that until those decisions are made
' j Y4 D x6 s2 d+ Q. nthe current dog access rules (which use a mixture of times and dates across Auckland) will
