We live nearby and have been loyal customers of Royal Oak Mall for more than 20 years. We usually shop at the mall several times a week.
About 13:45pm today, I was shopping with my mother, who is 80 years old. After finishing our grocery shopping, we went to the key repair shop in the mall (shop number may be 23C) to ask whether they had a battery for my Swatch watch (model SR936SW).
The Korean male staff member checked briefly. However, within about half minute, he suddenly became very aggressive and attempted to force me to pay $18 to change a battery that was not even available. When I declined, he behaved in a threatening manner and attempted to grab our groceries. He also tried to confront my elderly mother.
He returned my watch without replacing anything. Because of his aggressive behaviour, I immediately called the police. The police reference number for this incident is PO65761737.
Another customer, a local lady who witnessed the situation, helped protect us and escorted us safely to the mall car park.
This incident was extremely frightening and shocking for both of us, especially for my elderly mother. We have always felt safe shopping at Royal Oak Mall, so this experience was very disturbing.
As New Zealand citizens and long-term customers of the mall, we believe it is important to report this kind of behaviour to help prevent criminal or threatening incidents in our community.
We hope the mall management can investigate this matter and ensure the safety of customers, particularly elderly shoppers.
