The 4.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Dunedin overnight was the strongest quake to hit the city in more than 40 years.

According to GeoNet the previous shake bigger than last night's was a 4.9 magnitude quake that struck Dunedin on April 9 1974.

The quake in 1974 damaged chimneys and caused groceries to fall from their shelves, reports the Otago Daily Times.

The Earthquake Commission has received one claim today resulting from last night's quake and it expects more claims to be lodged.
