‘Hom rong’: ‘The Overture’  portrays much of the essential parts of Thai culture and the Thai character, as well as showing the interaction of Old Siam with the hard realities of adjustment to the modern world.


The movie tells the story of the life of Luang Pradit Phairoh (known as ‘Sorn’), a professional player of the ‘ra-nad ek,’ the Thai xylophone.
It both starts and ends in
the 1940s in a Bangkok under Japanese military occupation, but flashes back to show Sorn’s childhood and youth in a village in the remote jungle, through to his
recruitment as a member of a royal court musical ensemble.
An intense musical rivalry develops between the young Sorn and Khun In, an older master of the ra-nad ek.

Though thoroughly Thai, the movie is a powerful and moving statement of the importance of cultural traditions to maintaining a living sense of our humanity and identity, and therefore presents a message that is relevant for us all.
