As far as codified racism goes however, New Zealand would have to rank among the least racist countries - I'd love to hear which countries' laws are less discriminatory to minorities. You have to remember the countries aren't actually that close: they're separated by 1350 miles of Pacific ocean, and distinctly different founding populations - convicts vs pioneers. And no, New Zealand hasn't experienced a rise in overall racial tension (to my knowledge at least). While there are of course racists in New Zealand, and racists tend to be more rural and/or of a conservative disposition, New Zealanders are typically less racist than Australians throughout every level of society. While I have sympathy for the Asian commentators here bemoaning the racism they have personally experienced (there definitely are pockets of anti-Asian sentiment in New Zealand, often related to sky-high real estate prices blamed on Chinese speculators), I would respond with two points. 1) Anecdotes aren't data. 2) I would be extremely surprised if the country any of them hail from is less racist than New Zealanders towards minorities in their own populations. As a Kiwi who has lived in the US for the last seven years, I have to say New Zealand has a far less racist (and less sexist) society than America.
