Dear Mr xxxxx
Re : Kxxxx xxxxx
I am sending this letter to all families whose sons have had to remain at home over the last two weeks since the Measles situation began worsening in our school.
Firstly I would like to apologise that your son has been prevented from coming to school for two weeks when in the vast majority of cases he has been fit and well, and able to attend. I know that a few of you would have preferred for your sons to remain in school, despite the potential risk of him contracting Measles, however the other consideration, as far as the school community was concerned, was that it would increase the chance of prolonged infection in our school in terms of other people contracting Measles.
At the moment the advice we have received is that all students can return to school on Monday 10th March. We are not expecting this to change over the next 24 hours. I would ask that you keep your son away from school tomorrow, please. Next week we can begin to help your son get up to date with his work.
What we are intending is to try and compensate for the time your son has missed, by looking at the potential of opening our school during the second week of the forthcoming school holidays. We are working on the logistics of this at the moment and I will write to you next week once we have put this programme together. We will provide the opportunity for all students to catch up on any assessment work that they have missed, and it is likely that we will be able to offer subject specific support in a range of subjects on work that your son has missed over the last two weeks.
We know that students not being at school is not as good as them being here and we want to do everything we can to lessen the impact that it has had on their learning this year. I hope that they have managed to access work in all of their subject areas over the last two weeks. We have tried to do whatever we could to offer support to all of our young men who have been away from school.
Once again, thank you for your support with what has been a challenging situation for the school, and of course, for you as families. Because the health of our students has been put at risk, we have had to act under the advice of the Public Health Service. I am hopeful that from the start of next week we can get back to normal.
Please feel free to contact my PA, Sandra White on 09 410 1800 or email swhite@westlake.school.nz if you require any further information.
Yours faithfully,
David Ferguson
