Our couriers are all Owner/ Driver Contractors, which means setting up as a Sole Trader GST registered business. Contracts for successful applicants are for three year periods (renewable).You must be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident. All the set up costs such as the van, scanner, uniform, insurances such as Public Liability, Carriers Liability, Motor Vehicle and Equipment, are at the Owner-Driver’s cost. Couriers must have a full NZ Drivers Licence (not restricted) plus a Dangerous Goods Licence. Set up costs are around $35,000 - $50,000,depending on the cost of the van ( ie age and mileage). A brand new Toyota Hiace with the Courierpost discount is about $40,000. The van must not be more than 5 years old at the start of the contract. Painting and signage decals are roughly $2,500- $3,000. Insurances of public and carrier’s liability, motor vehicle and equipment insurance: $3,000 - $3,500 per year. The scanner costs $2,900 + GST and the uniform around $600 + GST. There are also living costs from the Owner- Driver start date to the following 20th of the month when the first payment of earnings is made. Run earnings are paid on 20th each month following and carry a guaranteed daily minimum which is run dependant, in the region of $70,000 to $75,000 + GST per annum. Being self-employed you will be responsible for your own tax commitments and will need to have an accountant to assist with this, approx. cost $1,000 P.A. The average fuel costs are roughly $400-$500 per month. Most couriers work between 12 to 14 hours per day, starting at about 5am Monday to Friday and also Saturday mornings.
