Our brains are wired quite differently for native languages and non-native languages. Think about the process we acquire both languages, the former is at subliminal level, the babies are soaked in the whole environment, and their brains are structured differently from adults, so the native language actually imprinted on human being, just like baby birds imprint their mothers when they first saw their mothers.
Whereas the non-native languages are usually acquired through a very conscious and deliberate level, and more importantly acquired when our brains are quite different from children's brains. That is why it is not almost impossible to acquire a second language which is very different from your native one.
I think what we can do is to partly imitate what we went through when we were babies: "soak" ourselves into the environment, but since our brains are very different than babies', we will have to deliberately "soak", consciously "touch" it.
Do you have the experience like this: when the TV show in your mother tongue is played, you can listen to it while doing other things, the native language undestanding can happen at the edge of your conscious, but that could hardly happen when you listen to foreign language show. That is why I mean by "deliberately" |
