In 1990, the U.S. government authorized compensation of $20,000 per surviving victim of Japanese American internment camps during World War II. However, the Justice Department faced considerable delays due to the volume of claims, prompting Congress to amend and extend the Act multiple times, with the final claim settled as late as 1999. Under the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, Beyond monetary compensation, the Act also provided a public apology, established educational programs, and formally acknowledged the injustices experienced by Japanese Americans.
Eligibility for reparations is limited to United States citizens and lawful permanent residents. Consequently, persons of Latin American origin of Japanese descent (mainly from Peru) who were brought to the United States during the period of detention were not eligible for compensation. However, in 1996, a class action lawsuit obtained approximately $5,000 in compensation for this population.
