that is a learning curve...... Western way of dealing with things.
If you don't renew, your lease is actually at an end. Just that some people didn't bother, but the consequences is imminent.
My guess is the landlord actually reminded LZ (with rent review increment ie market rent), and LZ didn't bother to do it, so they just take possession???? By then, LZ wanted to fight back, they talked about law, and let lawyer sorted it out kind of thingy??? haha.... typical kiwi-chinese scenary.
