Food Price Index: June 2010 highlights:

In June 2010 compared with May 2010:
     Food prices rose 1.3 percent.
     Fruit and vegetable prices rose 9.3 percent.
     Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 2.7 percent.
     Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.3 percent.
     Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 0.8 percent.
     Grocery food prices fell 0.8 percent.

From June 2009 to June 2010:
     Food prices decreased 2.0 percent. This is the largest annual fall
     since the monthly series began in January 1960.

Accommodation Survey: May 2010 highlights

Compared with May 2009:
     Domestic guest nights were down 10 percent and international guest
     nights were almost unchanged.
     Total guest nights were down 6 percent.
     Guest nights in the North Island were down 4 percent, while guest
     nights in the South Island were down 9 percent.
     Canterbury had the largest decrease in guest nights and the Auckland
     region had the only increase.
     Motels had 11 percent fewer guest nights, while hotels were the only
     accommodation type with more guest nights, up 3 percent.

Electronic Card Transactions: June 2010 highlights:

Changes in the value of transactions (compared with May 2010) were as
follows:

        Transactions in the core retail industries were up (0.6 percent).
        Transactions in the retail industries were up (0.4 percent).
        Total electronic card transactions were up (0.7 percent).
        By industry group, non-retail and consumables had the largest
        increases.
        The actual (not seasonally adjusted) value of transactions in the
        core retail series was up 4.0 percent from June 2009.

International Travel and Migration: June 2010 highlights

In June 2010 compared with June 2009:
        Visitor arrivals (145,800) were up 8 percent from June 2009
        (135,200).
        There were more visitors from Australia (up 5,300), China, and
        Japan (each up 2,900).
        New Zealand residents departed on 198,800 overseas trips, up 13
        percent from June 2009 (176,300).
        New Zealand residents departed on more trips to Australia (up
        8,400), the United States (up 3,000), and the United Kingdom (up
        2,600).

In June 2010:
        Permanent and long-term arrivals exceeded departures by 100 on a
        seasonally adjusted basis

Household Use of Information and Communication Technology: 2009

New Zealanders unplugMobile access plays an increasingly important role as New Zealanders use the Internet both at home andaway from home, Statistics New Zealand said today. In over half of households with the Internet in 2009,a laptop or a handheld computer was used to access the Internet at home, five times more than in 2006.

One-quarter of Internet users in 2009 used mobile phones or wireless hotspots to access the Internetwhile they were away from home. This compared with 14 percent of users in 2006.“The increase may be because laptops are much more affordable now, and wireless connectiontechnology is increasingly a standard function for laptops, handheld devices, and mobile phones,”Statistics NZ manager Gary Dunnet said.

The unavailability of broadband was the most common reason for not having broadband in rural areas.Rural areas are those with a population of less than 300. In contrast, cost was the most common barrierto broadband for those living in urban areas and rural centres.

At December 2009, almost half of New Zealand households not planning to get digital TV in the next 12months cited cost as a reason for remaining on analogue broadcasting. This was followed by over 40percent of households who stated they simply do not want it. 

The move to digital TV by New Zealanderswill allow analogue television to be switched off in the future. This will free up spectrum for other usessuch as mobile broadband.Over half of New Zealanders indicated they would vote online in general and local elections. Youngerpeople and those earning higher incomes were more likely to vote online. These groups also have higherproportions of Internet users than other groups.

core retail 指的是 除了车，能源，和食品之外的retail，综合反映国民的消费力

今天在BNZ的内部周刊里发现有趣的东西，让我想起了股神Warren Buffett说过的一句话：Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. ;lol;


One of the very interesting aspects of the recovery underway in the New Zealand economy is that we economists can easily cite numbers showing that growth is occurring. But people can also quite legitimately say that it does not feel like a recovery is underway. Both sets of comments are right and here is why.

First, here are some numbers showing that growth – as in things becoming larger than they were before – is occurring.
• Car registrations in the June quarter were ahead 35% from a year earlier and 0.5% roughly seasonally
adjusted from the March quarter.


• Commercial vehicle registrations in the quarter were ahead 16% from a year ago and 11% seasonally

adjusted from the March quarter.


• Farm sales in the June quarter were ahead 6% from a year ago and around 25% seasonally adjusted
from the March quarter.


• The number of consents issued for the construction of new dwellings was up 28% in the three months

to May from a year ago and 5% from three months earlier seasonally adjusted.


• And finally, gross domestic product in the March quarter was 1.9% ahead of a year earlier and up
0.6% in the quarter.


Now consider the same data series in levels terms.


• Car registrations in the June quarter were 15% below average for the past six years.



• Commercial vehicle registrations in the June quarter were 31% below average.



• Farm sales in the June quarter were 45% below average.

• Dwelling consents in the three months to May were 28% below average.


• And in the March the level of gross domestic product was still 1.6% below the peak in the December
quarter of 2008.

The economy is growing but from a low base. Not all sectors are enjoying the growth occurring in the likes of
dairy, forestry, education exports, manufacturing, infrastructure and house building. Access to credit to finance growth is not what it was and businesses are finding they must generate more of their own funds to finance growth – or maybe accept increased offshore ownership given the unwillingness of Kiwis to save and supply the capital our businesses need.

This situation of growth from a low base still leaving many people disappointed with the level of activity is likely to continue into 2011 and we think that is what our survey was picking up this month.

  Milk powder, butter, and cheese and logs, wood, and wood articles
  recorded the largest increases.
  Imports were down $56 million (1.6 percent) to $3.5 billion, but would
  have shown an increase if a one-off import of aircraft in June 2009 was
  excluded.

  The trade balance was a surplus of $276 million (7.3 percent of
