今年到BAY OF ISLANDS。
Day 1
This holiday I went to Paihia, also known as Bay of Islands, with my mum, a friend and her mum. At 7:40 we arrived at the bus station and found seats. I sat with my friend while my mum sat with her mum. We had approximately four hours ofdrive ahead of us,this was going to be tiring. Surprisingly the drive wasn’t too boring, I kept myself quite entertained by talking to myfriend and listening to music. Yet there were still times when I really wanted to move about and stretch my legs.
When the bus came to a stop everyonetumbled off.Our first task at Paihia was to buy our Dolphin Viewing/Swimming tickets, which took no time. Task two was to go to the information centre and ask a few thousand questions about Paihia. Once the first two tasks were complete we went on to task three: looking for Peppertree Lodge, our accommodation. The scene from the shore was stunning so wetook our time. It turned out that our accommodation was a lot closer to the wharf than we thought. Peppertree Lodge was a nice and cleanplace with friendly staff. After unpacking we went out for a stroll around thetown while looking for a good place to eat. In the end starvation left us withno choice but a small Chinese restaurant. The place was such a rip off with their expensive food, small servings and few ingredients. But we were all so hungry that nobody complained much.
Once we were filled up we decided to goto the Treaty Grounds of the Treaty of Waitangi. The walk was supposed to take20 minutes. My friend wasn’t very interested in the Treaty of Waitangi and neither was I, but the mothers insisted, so we might as well obey. The place was interesting enough, theywere many interesting places to see, but the Treaty house itself was not opento public, you had to pay to see the Maori cultural performances. Overall thetrip was still interesting and the walk along the beach was refreshing.
When we got back we played on the beachesand walked around looking at the shops. There were some very interestingsouvenir shops with decorative items. My favourite shop was a candy shop called Get Fudged which sold sugar mice.
At the end of the day we went back toPeppertree Lodge and use their shared kitchen to cook dinner. After dinner wewent out for a walk. When passing the information centre we booked a kayaking tour for tomorrow after the dolphin viewing and swimming. It turned out thatmum forgot her wallet so my friend and I had to run back and get it. Ouraccommodation may be close to the wharf and information centre, but for twounfit people like us it was equivalent to a marathon. After the walk we returned to the lodgeand prepared for sleep. I lay on my bunk bed for quite a while before I finallydrifted asleep.
Day 2
The next morning everyone woke up ratherearly. We had a nice breakfast of toast and milk. Plain but good. At 12 we had to be at the Paihia wharf intime for our Dolphin Eco Experience(guaranteed dolphin viewing, free swim) sowe needed to plan out our timetablecarefully to be able to eat and take our seasick medicines in time. The morning was spent wandering aroundthe town, and I bought a black and white dress. At 11 we went to a Thairestaurant to eat. The food was nice but we didn’t eat anymore than we needed in case we were to feel ill on the boat
There weren’t many people on the boat andwe were all excited. The trip began quite well but after an hour we weregetting a bit disappointed. While looking for dolphins we learnt someinformation about dolphins:
Dolphins travel in groups called ‘pods’. The Bottlenose Dolphin, which is the most common dolphin in Paihia, can grow up to 3ms and swim at 45kmp. Dolphins aren’t conscious breathers which means they can’t breathe automatically like humans. In order to continue breathing they shut off half off their brains every time they sleep, then they sway over to the other half. Dolphins are mammals and to keep warm they have blubber (fat) that keeps them warm. Baby dolphins are born with little blubber so they require feeding up to 20 times per hour so the high protein in their milk can prevent them from getting hypothermia. This is why we can’t swim with young dolphins. Dolphin milk has up to 45% protein. Due to the dolphins’ sensitive skin we can’t touch then in case they get skin infections or diseases. Dolphins are incredibly smart. When they look for food they send off sound waves and listen to the echo which is a bit like the radar humans use to detect items, only more complex.
There was a front deck on the ship whichwas good for viewing dolphins as well as scenery. There was a space limit of 8people on at one time but I managed to get a spot with my friend. We had beenat sea for nearly 3 hours and we were a bit unhappy. On the deck we talked andjoked so much until the dolphins had been totally forgotten. Suddenly somebodysitting next to us spotted dolphin fins. There was a great rush and people tripover each other to take the best photos.
Due to the fact that there was a babydolphin in the pod and that the dolphins were actually sleeping, we couldn’tswim with them. Despite that it was a fun-filled afternoon, and sometimes the dolphins would come so close to the boat that we could nearly touch them.
By the time we had returned to the wharfwe were ready for the next activity, kayaking. The service was very nicebecause it was a personal tour. The scene was nice and I had a lot of fun kayaking in doubles with my mum. When we reached the waterfall we were pushedin and soaked fully through. There were many things to see on the kayak likebirds and plant life. The trip was tiring but it was definitely worthit.
That night we slept really well, most likely due to tiredness.
Day3
The next morning we went to Russell on aferry. It was a short ride. At Russell we visited the information centre firstand then went to Long Beach. The walk consisted of up and down hills, but itwasn’t too difficult. To tell the truth Long Beach isn’t as good as peoplesaid, but the walk was still worth it. When we’ve finally reached the towncentre we were exhausted. In the end we went on a Russell Mini-tour Bus. It wasa nice experience, learning about the history of New Zealand’s first capitol. There were many interesting sights and the town itself was an artefact. The onehour tour ended pretty quickly. Then we went to find a restaurant for lunch. The driver showed us some good places. We picked one of the cafes and had a nicelunch. The seafood chowder and Spanish prawns were really nice and we all had agood lunch. The rest of our time was spent on the rocky beach playing. I worelong jeans which got wet after I startedwalking in the water.
My pants were still damp when we went on the ferry back to Paihia, making the ridequite uncomfortable. After arriving at Paihia we picked up our luggage, had aquick takeaway and waited for our bus. The bus taking us back to Auckland was afew minutes late, but it arrived eventually. On the bus I wasn’t as jumpy andbored as the trip going to Paihia. Most of my time was spent listening tomusic. Finally we were back in Auckland. The trip to Paihia was fun but I couldn’t wait to gethome and have a nice sleep.
