http://www.fairfaxnz.co.nz/careers/internscheme.html
Fairfax Media, New Zealand's largest media company, has established a Journalism Intern scheme to emphasise its commitment to editorial excellence.
Fairfax's operations include nine daily newspapers including The Dominion Post and The Press, two national Sunday papers, magazines, a magazine publishing business, various internet operations, and over 50 community newspapers throughout the country.
Fairfax has a strong focus on innovation and leadership, and the intern scheme is an extension of its commitment to fostering talented journalists. As part of our commitment, Fairfax has developed an intern scheme which will help participants undertake studies in journalism through practical and financial assistance.
The scheme offers participants:
the opportunity to study for one year at one of three approved institutions - The University of Canterbury (Christchurch), Aoraki Polytechnic (Timaru), Massey University (Wellington), and Waikato Institute of Technology (Waikato).
mentoring and training with qualified and experienced journalists;
work experience during course holidays at one of Fairfax's more than 70 different publications;
reimbursement of course fees on successful completion of their journalism course; and
the possibility of permanent employment with Fairfax at the conclusion of their studies.
HOW THE SCHEME WORKS
Participants in the scheme will be selected by Fairfax in conjunction with the approved institutions. The selection process will include interviews and testing of each proposed participant's journalism skills.
The decision about which institution the participant will be required to attend and which Fairfax publication the participant will be associated with will, to the extent possible, be decided in conjunction with each participant. However, Fairfax will make the final decision on such matters. Each course of study is for one year.
During the course holidays, participants will be employed by one of Fairfax's publications. During this time they will receive training from experienced journalists and have a mentor chosen for them who will offer support and guidance.
On the successful completion of their course, participants will be reimbursed for their course fees. In addition, Fairfax will seek to offer employment to participants in a Fairfax publication. Where possible the participant's preferences will be accommodated.
If Fairfax offers a participant employment, that participant will be bonded to Fairfax for two years and, if the participant decides to terminate his or her employment within the two year period, he or she may be required to refund all course fees paid by Fairfax as part of the scheme.
FAIRFAX NEW ZEALAND INTERN SCHEME OUTLINE OF TERMS
Fairfax’s obligations to applicants:
Prior to making an offer, we will consult with applicants and accommodate their preferences to the extent possible in respect of the institution they study at, and Fairfax publication/s they work for (both during and after studies).
We will provide them with the opportunity for paid work at one of our publications during course holidays.
During holiday work with us, we will provide training and mentoring.
On the successful completion of the course we will reimburse course fees.
Fairfax’s expectation of applicants:
They will undertake their journalism course at an institution agreed between us and work during their course holidays at one of Fairfax's publications.
At all times during the course, they will achieve satisfactory grades and work both to the satisfaction of institution staff and Fairfax editors.
In the course and during work experience, they will act in a manner appropriate for a Fairfax intern, with integrity and keeping confidential any information they receive during their internship.
If Fairfax is able to offer employment on the completion of the course, they will work for Fairfax for two years.
Applicants agree that Fairfax is allowed to discuss applicants’ progress with tutors and the institution where they are studying. |
