I personally am in similar situation 3-4 years ago. And there's my experience. I guess LZ is in IT industry right? Most likely in very specialized field, that explains why the potential employer in Aus is so keen to get you there in a rush.
3-4 years ago I was working in an Auckland IT consulting company. The main thing I don't like there is the skill / experience I get is too narrow, I'm only learning a very specific kind of product for a very specific industry, I'll lock my whole career to a single job if I stay there. Also, the worse part is I'll have very little chance progress out developer role. Ideally I want move to more senior level in the long run, i.e. Architect (who don't? lol).
Anyway, eventually I found a job in Australia (Sydney), salary is good, Aus dollar is high and Australia have LAFHA at that time (don't worry about LAFHA now, it's no longer applicable), so financially it work out well, but most importantly, this Australia role help me progress above developer role.
Live in Sydney is not as comfortable as Auckland, if wasn't for the money (and job experience), there is no reason to prefer Sydney over Auckland. Plus with house price in Sydney, all the extra money you earn is spend on property anyway. The only way it would work financially is earn Aus dollar and pay NZ mortgage, especially with super strong Aus dollar at that time, this work very well.
After I got enough experience in Sydney, I applied and got a more senior role in NZ so I moved back to NZ. Overall I consider myself very fortunate to progress above development role. The IT trend in NZ / AUS big corporate is outsourcing development roles to India. No matter we like it or not, this is a irreversible trend and it will only get worse. I believe once you arrived Aus, you'll be surprised the majority of development (even test) is outsourced to India (which really beg the question how long will they keep hiring you). My opinion is moving up the ladder to Architect / PM is a much more comfortable place to be, as those roles is not as easy to outsource.
So, in a nutshell, you can earn more as contractor developer in specialized software, but the other side of coin is your long term career development. If this Australia role tick both box, don't think, RUN :)
If it only offer more money but no career advancement, personally I'll look for a role that got better career prospect. For me, the last thing I want is doing same thing over and over and stuck with a very narrow-skilled CV and can only apply for 1 kind of very specific development role. |
