Aucklanders are advised to exercise caution as heavy rain and strong winds are expected across the Auckland region between Friday evening to Saturday afternoon. This raises the possibility of localised flooding and rising rivers. Over the same period, winds, especially in coastal regions, may add to the inclement weather. People in these areas should watch out for rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding, and hazardous driving conditions. The Harbourmaster is advising all recreational boat owners to check their moorings before the weather worsens. Very large swells are predicted for the entire West Coast of Auckland and we advise boaties to ensure they are well prepared and only go out if necessary. Auckland Council Civil Defence is monitoring the situation and advises people to take the following simple precautions prior to the bad weather to minimise the impact of this weather. · Check drains and spouting and clear any blockages. · Stay up to date with weather forecasts on TV, radio and the internet. · Bring pets indoors. · Secure rubbish bins or any other loose objects that could be a danger in strong winds, including trampolines. · Report flooding to council. · Limit non essential travel. · Ensure a torch, radio and spare batteries are to hand. If you must travel, drivers are urged to take the following precautions: · Check NZ Transport website before travelling. · Headlights on. · Drive to the conditions. · Keep a safe distance from the car in front.
