On April 8, Apple unveiled plans for the biggest and most exciting iPhone software update yet. iPhone OS 4 will include over 100 new user features for iPhone and iPod touch owners to enjoy. And for developers, a new software development kit (SDK) offers over 1500 new APIs to create apps that are even more powerful, innovative, and amazing.
iPhone OS 4 will ship this summer for iPhone and iPod touch, and for iPad in the fall. A developer beta is available now.

100+ New User FeaturesWith iPhone OS 4, iPhone owners will enjoy over 100 new features that make it easier to interact with apps, manage email, read books, and more. New features include the following:

• MultitaskingDevelopers will have access to seven multitasking services, which will allow tasks to be performed in the background while preserving performance and battery life. So you’ll be able to make a Voice over IP call while playing a game or checking email, find a restaurant on Urbanspoon while listening to Pandora, and more.
• FoldersOrganize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Get faster access to your favorites and browse and manage up to 2160 apps at once — many more than the current limit of 180 apps.
  

• Even Better MailSee messages from all your email accounts displayed together in a unified inbox, switch between inboxes more quickly, organize messages by threads, and even open attachments in third-party apps.
• iBooksThe best way to browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device. Easily flip through the pages of a book you've downloaded from the iBookstore while listening to your music collection. Browse tens of thousands of books — many of them free — by title, author, or genre. You can even check out reviews and read sample pages before you buy.
  

DevelopersWith a rich set of over 1500 new APIs, the iPhone SDK 4 provides developers with a broad range of technologies to enhance the functionality of their iPhone and iPod touch applications. Developers can use these new APIs to make their apps more powerful, more feature rich, and more amazing than before. They can even use new GameKit APIs to develop for Game Center, the social gaming network Apple will launch later this year.

• iAd iAd is a breakthrough mobile advertising platform from Apple. With it, apps can feature rich media ads that combine the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web. For developers, it means a new, easy-to-implement source of revenue. For advertisers, it creates a new media outlet that offers consumers highly targeted information.
• Enterprise iPhone OS 4 offers more useful features for businesses. With enhancements to security, scalability, and compatibility, IT managers have even more reasons to deploy iPhone throughout their enterprises.

iPhone OS 4 CompatibilityiPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).

　　1 多任务

　　没错，你没看错，的的确确是多任务。新的OS 4将允许任务在后台执行，同时还能保证运行的性能和电池的续航时间。不过目前最多支持7个多任务。一些多任务的特性：双击Home键弹出后台任务列表；提供包括了后台音乐、VOIP、后台定位、推送通知、本地通知、任务完成和快速切换。
　　
　　2 程序分类功能

　　也就是说用户可以建立一个文件夹，里面可以放入最多9个程序，进行方便的归类收藏。同时用户可以方便的将这个文件夹放到自己喜欢的位置。
　　
　　3 统一了多个邮箱的收发件功能，实现了统一

　　用户可以设置多个exchange游戏，可以在多个邮箱之间进行快速的切换，可以按邮箱主题分类组织，进行邮件附件关联发送。
　　
　　4 iBooks

　　苹果一直推崇了新的电子书销售模式。用户可以通过iBooks内置的iBook store购买电子书，并且可以支持无线同步电子书和书签。
　　
　　5 更多的企业功能

　　增加了安全性、可扩展性和兼容性之类企业用户需要的东西。
　　
　　6 Game Center，游戏中心

　　在iPhone OS 4当中，游戏类别的程序将会单独独立出来，作为App Store的延伸。实际就是一个游戏社交平台，用户将可以邀请朋友进行多人游戏，有全球成绩排行之类的功能。
　　
　　7 iAd

　　苹果所推出的一个新的广告平台。能够让广告商和开发者获得更多广告空间，以此来增加收入。iAd将由苹果来投放，利润的60%将返还给开发者。当然这对用户来说不一定会是个好事。不过老乔表示iAd将会做得很有趣，形式多种多样，不会让用户感到无聊和厌烦。
　　
　　然后视关于iPhone OS 4的SDK，现在所有的开发者都可以到iPhone开发中心下载iPhone OS 4的测试版SDK了。新的SDK包括1500多个新的API，例如开发者调动日历、照片库、短信应用、影片播放和获取、导航功能的改进和快速查看等。同时还将增加自动化测试、性能和功能分析。

以上便是iPhone OS 4的全部新特性一览。之前外界的种种猜测都被全部揭开了，有些是已经被预见到的，而有些没有被预见到。不过总体来说，这回的OS 4还是挺诱人的。期待OS 4正式发布的那天吧。
　　
　　不过下面是一盆冷水，是关于iPhone OS 4所支持的机型，包括：iPhone 3G、iPhone 3GS、2代iPod touch、3代iPod touch这几款机型，将在夏天时候就可以用上iPhone OS 4。而iPad则要到秋天才能用上。而且某些iPhone OS 4的功能将不能支持全机型，例如多任务只支持iPhone 3GS和3代iPod touch。看来1代的用户需要换新一代的iPhone了。
