Cow's milk-based and goat's milk-based infant formulas, like the cow's milk and goat's milk, have many similarities in their nutrient composition.
Like breast milk, both formulas provide body-building proteins, essential fats, energy-giving carbohydrate (lactose, also called milk sugar), cal! cium and iron, vitamins A, C and E, plus other important minerals and vitamins.
Protein:
A difference between goat's' and cow's milk-based formulas is in the protein content.
The proteins in human breast milk, formula and cow's milk can be separated into two groups: whey and casein.
Breast milk is whey predominant (60% whey to 40% casein), and remains so during the entire feeding period.
Karicare cow's milk-based formulas are whey predominant, formulated to be like breast milk and easy for babies to digest. (Cow's milk whey protein makes a softer curd than the casein.)
Casein consists of several unique protein fractions. Various fractions of goat's milk protein differ from those of cow's milk and from human milk protein.
Due to the proportions of different casein fractions in goat's milk, its casein profile is closer to that of human milk than that of cow's milk. (Note that this is only the casein profile - just a part of th! e whole picture.)
Though Karicare goat formulas are casein pre dominant, goat's milk protein forms a naturally soft curd which may is easy for infants to digest.
Fats:
There are also some differences between the milks in the type of fats they contain.
The fat blend in Karicare goat's milk formulas contains goat milk fat which has naturally higher proportions of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). These fats are readily absorbed and may be easier for an infant to digest.
ADVANTAGES OF GOLD FORMULAS:
Omega fats
Karicare Gold infant formula (cow's milk-based) has an important advantage over Standard Starter formula and Goat formula.
Karicare Gold formulas have added omega essential fats which make them more like breast milk in their fatty acid profile. Karicare Gold formulas are enriched with both omega-3 DHA* and omega-6 AA**.
The essential omega fats DHA and AA are important for brain and visual development. Fats make up over 50% of the brain and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA is the most abundant of thes! e.
Rich sources of omega-3 DHA are breast milk and oily fish such as tuna and salmon. Other fish oils, fish and seafood supply smaller amounts.
Due to its fatty acid profile, the Gold formula can be considered closer to breast milk than goat formula.
IN SUMMARY:
Goat's milk formula is more expensive but this does not mean that it is nutritionally superior to cow's milk-based formula.
For some infants, goat's milk formula may be more easily digested, and it is sometimes less allergenic than cows' milk formula.
If the baby has no cow's milk protein allergy, the Karicare Gold 1 starter formula is our premium formula, recommended if a baby is fully bottle fed.
However, if you are breast feeding, with just top-ups of formula, or say one bottle a day, either Karicare Gold 1, Karicare standard infant formula or goat starter formula is suitable. |
