I am using amazon aws free instance and I am very happy about the service :-) It is free :-)

But to get 16 virtual cpu is very expensive for my work. The plan is m4.4xlarge and 3 Yr All Upfront Reserved is us$9387.

That is the cheapest way to amazon aws. There is no way for me to pay such price. I am just researching and hope to make money.

这年头花这么大成本搞自己一套in house的infrastructure的确实不多，佩服你的执着。我也想有这么一套玩意玩玩，不过我也就是有一个micro server下个电影的什么的没那个闲钱搞这么牛X的东西。

不过该考虑考虑aws,现阶段cloud,aws大势所趋，你在有钱，也买不来那些computational optimized的CPU和海量的instance,ssd,还有infrastructure support。当然如果就是自己感兴趣想玩弄这些东西那另说。

I don't care about sys admin role though I maintain at work microsoft iis production/test 2012 servers for the website I wrote. And I maintain centos, ubuntu, fedora server at home, without me, who else can do it without costing money? :-)

My main interest is on the website serving billions of people. But in reality, the website I work on which my boss told me covers 80% market share in one particular area in Australia/NZ, only have at most 50 requests per second. I guess most Australia big company will be at similar level. I wrote a website covers nearly 100% nz market share and the website performance was just 2 request per second and the customer apl, nalco, fletcher was very happy. That was around 6 years ago for the company I worked for before I left.

Here is the list for 8k covers
   a diy assemble i7 4770k cpu with 32gb ram and lots of samsung pro/evo ssd drives 512gb, 256gb,
   apple mac pro desktop 32gb ram 2tb drive and a ssd 500gb

I need to test my web server performance. Here is the result I just test which is not the peak level. It is just 90000 requests per second. The file size is just 2 bytes which will push web server performance to max.

oh i didn't realize you are on the sys admin side (thought you were a developer). Spending $8k for home equipment? geesh what are you doing? trying to build your personal cloud? You should try to do everything leveraging AWS etc so you can grow as per your need (may be not appropriate for whatever you are trying to do).

You should consider switching to else where, there are a lot of money in architecture/design if you know the right people.

I report to a GM today. All my peers are Head of except me. I should have never reported directly to a GM, but company see my team as a core focus growth area and hence put me at that layer (to show the importance of my team).

I can't see myself getting to the next level, for two reasons:
- i am not interested, my current level is already political enough, the higher you go the more shit you have to deal with. I am not even sure how much longer i want to be at my current level.
- there's a ceiling that i have reached and the next level isn't something they will ever consider a 1st generation Chinese (a different GM is trying to tell me otherwise and tell me i can go very far within the company, which i don't agree).

Yes we do live like a king at home (and hence even with my current income we hardly save any), to give you an example, i have 3 kids, i can spent $10 on a mango, just for one daughter, and i can spend $7 on one strawberry for my son (before it's in season), and they have 2-3 servings of fruits everyday, and we can do that for months. We dine out a lot, spend $80-100 per meal for either standard lunch or dinner over weekend, every single weekend.

I have a very different perspective in life, to me, giving my family and kids the best of everything is how i live. :)

It is very convenient and faster to type in English and I do not have religious argument that I must type in English. I am just lazy. But if someone force me to type in Chinese, I will type in English instead for obvious reasons. :-)

I guess even for the salary figure 150k, the tax is 33% above 70k which is quite heavy if as a permanent employee.

Here is the tax result from ird related to single person 150k. The income after tax is around 110k

No, the company I work for is very small. I don't have such salary figure. My salary figure is far lower compare to $150k. My boss was saying that as he compare to my salary to the general manager of the company I work for. I only have experience as team leader. I am not sure what is the difference between head of role and team leader. My current title is just system engineer. I don't have the word senior inside job title.
But as a business owner for the company as my boss, he can claim lots of expense as company which I cannot. i.e. I bought two used ups from trademe at $220 and around $8,000 computers and network switches which I can only paid from my after tax income. If I was a company share holder, I will just buy a new one and put as business expense. :-) I am using all these equitments and hope to make money, thus not a big deal for me anyway.
