Brownlee calls in KiwiRail over asbestos

Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee is to meet with KiwiRail officials over the discovery of asbestos in paint used on some of its locomotives. Mr Brownlee told reporters he would be meeting with KiwiRail on Tuesday afternoon. Officials would be bringing test results with them to indicate how extensive the problem is, he said. On Friday, the company said asbestos was found in the soundproofing compound used in 40 DL locomotives and some freight services had been cancelled over the weekend while further testing was carried out. The locomotives were built by Chinese company Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. KiwiRail earlier said the use of asbestos was a breach of contractual specifications for the design and manufacture of the locomotives. "We are clearly very disappointed with this situation and are working closely with the manufacturers to understand how this could possibly have occurred," KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy said. "They have taken full responsibility for this and have undertaken to do whatever is necessary to rectify the situation as quickly as possible for us." KiwiRail said it sought and received assurances that no asbestos was used in the making of the locomotives from the manufacturer in 2013, following reports of asbestos in Chinese-manufactured locomotives in Australia. |
