The 12 Isles of Ahntoneo 安东尼奥的12个小岛 (By Jerry Li, 11 years old)
Long ago on an opal sea, there was a country called Ahntoneo. Ahntoneo was an outcrop of land jutting out of a country called Fertila. Then came a time when a great tragedy struck Fertila, an evil sorcerer whose name those would later fear: Akmamen. He struck like a bolt of lightning bringing disaster to the land; he enslaved the people, hideously changed the beasts of burden then finally he fought those few survivors who had not succumb to despair. They however were no match against Akmamen, not even their great protector; the great birds were no match against him or his gokawks: huge hawks whose talons were made of metal and feathers lined with blood and made of steel. That night everyone could feel and hear the evil presence of the gokawks and even more: the scarlet cloud who was Akmamen. Even the dragons in Ahntoneo could not breathe flame or happiness into them; it was as though the fall of Fertila had deadened all who was living. Little did they know that they would have their own sequel of Fertila. *** Twelve years later Akmamen’s greed could not wait, he attacked Ahntoneo. However, this time he was unprepared for the dragons, beasts and magic he would face, within moments he was ousted. Irritated at his subjects he cooked up a new plan. He would steal those secret herbs kept in the palace gardens of Ahn. Akmamen stole away for many more years then finally the moment arrived, the year of the snake had come, the year that evil would conquer, the year that the giant emerald snake constellation called Serpenta would be directly overhead. At New Year’s night after the clock struck 12, Akmamen slipped into the palace. His moment had come. He headed back to Fertila, now called the Lands of Shadow when a huge yellow dragon soared into view, Akmamen knew how dangerous these mythical beasts were, he tried to escape but found himself tailed by the great yellow beast. The dragon breathed yellow fire and the scarlet cloud turned to ash at the edges, then in a puff of smoke, he vanished; with the herbs.
*** Long ago there were 12 magic herbs which when mixed into a brew it can cure every disease. Then a sorcerer called Akmamen stole them away from the palace garden, and hid them away in the twelve most fearful and dangerous isles in Ahntoneo. Much later when ten generations had passed the sorcerer inflicted a terrible disease to the people of Ahntoneo and the only remedy was the twelve magic herbs. King John had fallen seriously ill to the disease. His son Prince Peter was only a teenager when his father had died of the terrible illness. Fearful for his life he went to Jake the old librarian the only question on his mind “how can this awful disease be stopped?” Peter asked. Jake jumped then turned “ah king Peter so pleased to see you, oh yes the disease hmm as far as I know the only way to cure or indeed wipe out the disease is to find the twelve isles where the twelve magic herbs are hidden, and because no one has touched them they will be simply abundant.” Peter gazed at him. “Oh yes of course you don’t even know about it yet, right” so that night the two went on discussing on their plan to bring back the secret of the herbs. So it was that the following night found Peter and his uncle Josef sneaking out into the night armed with 2 daggers and 2 swords and a bow and arrows each. They were on a mission to find those 12 magic herbs hidden on 12 isles. However, the evil Akmamen had sensed them and awoke a terrible guardian for each herb, but of course, that would never deter Peter and his uncle. *** The only evidence they had to which isles the herbs where hidden was an ancient manuscript, which was thought lost long ago: The twelve magic herbs were once up and growing in the famed herb garden of Ahn Palace, then on the 40th night of the year of the snake, an evil year that is where illnesses spread and stay the guards were enchanted sleep for a year and a day. There were craters and pockmarks in the palace garden and the magic herbs were nowhere to be seen, they were stolen. Several villages reported that Akmamen’s 12 giant birds called gohawks carried the herbs. They were flying low over these places: The Isle of the Pit, The Isle of the Desert Sands, The Isle of the Castle of Amenkek, The Isle of the Mankeep Trees, The Glacier Isle, The Isle of the Beast, The Isle of the Dreaming Forest, The Isle of the Great Serpent Ranser, The Isle of the Ghost Ship, The Isle of the Black Castle, The Isle of the Beastly Plain and The Isle of the Disappearing Castle. The companions journeyed to The Isle of the Pit Cliff first but they were going to get a nasty shock. |
