BBC format Top Gear on his way to China
The regional broadcaster Hunan TV will cooperate with the BBC to launch a localized version of Top Gear. The show is the BBC’s most lucrative export, with a global audience of 350 million. It is also the most illegally-downloaded programme on the planet.
The BBC has high hopes for a Chinese version of the show. China overtook the US to become the world’s largest car market in 2009. Joyce Yeung, BBC Worldwide Senior Vice President for Global Sales in Asia, said in The Independent : “We are very excited about developing a Top Gear format for China and also in South Korea.”
The chinese version of the Emmy-winning show, which will be broadcast from April 23. The weekly show, which is called Zui Gao Dang, will be composed of informations about new cars (from economical to luxiourious models) and stories about car races and challenges.It will broadcast at 17:30 every Saturday.
As in the original show, Zui gao Dang will have 3 presenters, including Bruce Law, a Hong Kong car stunt legend. Extra TV diversification is under discussion between BBC and Hunan TV, including internet and publishing.
Top Gear has been launched by the BBC in 1977. The second series was launched on the BBC in 2002 and a local version of the programme is shown in Australia, USA and Russia as well as on Nintendo devices !
3 other format from BBC have been acquired and are about to be adapted for the Chinese market: ”This Time Tomorrow”, “Last Choir Standing” and “Tonight’s the Night”.
