A dog which ripped a woman's face open during a pet store promotion in west Auckland yesterday will be classified as a menace but not destroyed.
8 z+ C* W3 a' h/ ]5 B$ a$ M3 gThe rottweiler dog latched onto the face of an Animates pet store staff member in the Westgate shopping centre, causing facial wounds a witness said were horrific. It was thought she may have had part of her lip torn off.
7 q" m7 x; @/ C, e- g; }% rThe staff member had leaned over to give a dog some food when it attacked. It was locked in the owner's car and the staff member was taken to hospital, where she may need plastic surgery.
Waitakere City Council manager of animal welfare Neil Wells said footage of the attack had been reviewed and the owner had done nothing wrong so the dog would not be destroyed.
"There are circumstances were a dog may retaliate through no fault of the owner but because of the unwise (action) or stupidity of a person who puts themselves in the area of a dog," Mr Wells said.
"To bend down and put your face into the territory of a dog that is being restrained anyway is not a wise thing to do."
However, he said because of the attack the dog would be classified as menacing and would not be allowed out without a muzzle.
"The owner has been spoken to and accepted we will be classified as a menacing dog."
He said the young male dog would also be neutered, which should change his behaviour, and given some training.
* J6 K5 C& {" uThe council could not get a court order to destroy the dog because it was considered to be under control and no offence had been committed.
The dog was in the shop as part of a promotion to "bring in your rottweiler" but the promotion had been dropped and Mr Wells said the shop was reviewing its safety procedure when people brought dogs into its shops.
He said the owner was devastated but did not offer to have the dog destroyed.
"Neither the victim nor Animates are asking for the dog to be destroyed. They understand they were at fault rather than the owner," Mr Wells said.

8岁的还是孩子啊，比起成人的伤害来说要大得多，会在小孩子身上留下阴影的！
而且罗威那是很好被训的，如果去正规的驯狗学校
