A person may qualify for apermanent resident visa if they still hold a resident visa which they have heldthat visa for least 2 years at the time of the application, or they have held aresident visa 3 months before submitting the permanent resident visa applicationand had held that resident visa continuously for at least 24 months before itexpired. If applying for a permanent resident visa based on the period of stayin New Zealand, the principal applicant must have stayed in New Zealand as aresident for at least 184 days in each of the 12-month portions of the 24months immediately preceding the date of their permanent resident visaapplication. Also, if the principal applicant’s resident visa was granted underthe Parent Category, they must have met all their resident visa conditions(known as section 49(1) conditions) e.g. to be sponsored for X number of years.
