Man pleads guilty to tax fraud of over $1 million
A New Plymouth man has pleaded guilty to 58 tax fraud charges involving more than $1 million.
Jianbin Wang and his co-accused Fenglan Liu, both in their 40s, appeared in New Plymouth District Court on Monday in relation to tax evasion and providing false information to the Inland Revenue Department.
The pair pleaded not guilty in September last year but Wang has changed his plea to guilty.
The IRD alleges $1.184 million was stolen but Wang planned to dispute that amount, prosecutor Andrew Britton said.
Liu faces 37 charges, has maintained her not guilty plea and has elected a judge-alone trial.
The charges related to both personal and company tax returns.
According to the Companies Office, Wang was sole director and shareholder of Top International Trading Limited, which was placed into liquidation by the High Court in February last year.
The judge alone trial is expected to start on Tuesday.
