Auckland Transport is building three new bus shelters in Symonds Street. The shelters are prototypes which will be used to gather feedback from the public.
The project
To improve the traveling experience for public transport users, Auckland Transport is developing a new attractive, functional and cost effective bus shelter for Auckland.
Bus shelter designs and location
Throughout May and June Auckland Transport will unveil three stunning new bus shelters along Symonds St in the central city. The three shelters are prototypes, once all three are constructed Auckland Transport will use them to gather feedback from the public on the look, feel and usability of the shelters. Feedback will be used to improve the shelters and will form one of several criteria which they will be assessed against when selecting the new bus shelter design (or designs) for Auckland.
All three shelters are designed to be varied in size and layout to adapt to different physical settings and passenger numbers. Once a preferred bus shelter design (or designs) is selected it will gradually be rolled out across Auckland.
Symonds Street has been selected as the trial location as it is a busy location with high passenger boarding numbers and frequent bus services. We are also able to construct all three shelters in close proximity to each other along Symonds Street.
The three prototypes have been chosen from a selection of quality design proposals.
Design
To ensure a robust final design Auckland Transport need to test the shelters in real life conditions to assess:
The level of weather protection provided
Safety (whether users feel safe in the shelters)
Comfort (are the shelters comfortable for users)
Physical accessibility (are they easily accessible by all users, including those with disabilities)
Whether they look good
Durability
Cost effectiveness
Ease of construction
The shelters are all modular designs, meaning that each bus shelter has parts that can be adapted to suit a variety of bus stop locations, from small through to large.
The shelters also provide the flexibility to change materials to compliment the look and feel of various locations.
Consultation
From Monday 7 July to Friday 22 August, the public will the chance to have their say on the three prototype bus shelters.
Feedback will be able to be submitted via an online feedback form on this webpage, or by visiting the shelters and collecting a freepost feedback form from an Auckland Transport Ambassador (ambassadors will be on site at different times during the consultation period).
Feedback will be used to improve the shelters and will form one of several criteria which they will be assessed against when selecting the new bus shelter design (or designs) for Auckland.
Once consultation kicks off, further information on the shelters will be available here or on posters which be placed in the shelters. The Auckland Transport Ambassadors on site will also be able to answer some basic questions and direct you to any further information you may require. |
