Desktop virus issue

Can anyone help me to explain the issue that my desktop had been installed the Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection but recently Windows Security Centre shows Virus Protection is OFF whereas Microsoft Security Essentials shows "Your pc is being monitored and protected". In this case, not sure where goes wrong and whether my desktop is really under virus protection or not and how to fix it. Thanks a lot in advance.

download a free anti virus named: malwarebytes, then stop the realtime protection from MSE, then scan you computer then turn on the MSE back
