The WHO wants you to stay at home and play video games
The World Health Organization (WHO) has partnered with game industry representatives to launch the #PlayApartTogether campaign to encourage people to follow social distance and hygiene recommendations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19 by staying at home, for example, and playing video games online.
Representatives from some of the world’s largest game studios have joined the campaign. Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, said: “It has never been so important to make sure people stay connected. Games are the perfect platform because they connect people through the lens of joy, purpose and meaning. We are proud to be part of such a rewarding and necessary initiative. “
And Nicolo Laurent, CEO of Riot Games, encouraged people to stay sociable while remaining physically distant by playing together online. “Physical distance shouldn mean social isolation!” he said. “Let’s stay physically separate – and take other public health measures, such as hand hygiene – to smooth the curve and #PlayApartTogether to support power in this crisis.” For Rioters, playing is more than just a game. It is a meaningful life’s work. And now, for billions of players around the world, playing could help save lives. Let’s fight this COVID 19 boss fight together. “It is somewhat ironic that the WHO is now promoting gambling as a pastime as it is one of the organizations that have worked to recognize “gambling disorder” as a mental health problem. While there are undoubtedly people who play video games to an extent that has a negative impact on their lives, many psychologists are doubtful whether an addition model based on substance abuse is suitable to describe this behavior. The lack of research into game disorders and the lack of an agreed definition have made it a controversial topic in the world of psychology.
In a report published last year in the WHO health journal, doctors were concerned about aspects of gaming, from the existence of loot boxes to collecting virtual armor or weapons to the existence of multiplayer, e-sports and Streaming, despite the lack of strong scientific evidence, could help addiction to underpin these concerns. However, it appears that WHO has now changed attitudes as a virus pandemic is a more pressing public health problem.
