Woman died in violent attack, say police
Police investigating the homicide of a Chinese woman in Wellington say she suffered a violent attack and could have been lying there for days before being discovered.
The body of the 37-year-old mother-of-two was found on Sunday afternoon by a male friend who went to visit after not hearing from her for several days.
The detective leading the investigation, Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel, told reporters on Monday that the woman had not been seen or heard from since Thursday evening.
Mr van den Heuvel said the woman moved to New Zealand in 2006 and has children aged seven and nine. He said they were not at the Brussels Street house in the suburb of Miramar when their mother's body was found.
"These children have only just learnt of their mother's death this morning and are naturally distraught. We will be interviewing the children today and they are now safe staying with other family members."
The woman's name has not been released as family in China have yet to be notified.
Mr van den Heuvel said a 58-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on an unrelated charge of breaching a protection order and is due to appear in the Wellington District Court on Monday.
Police said they would like to speak to anyone who may have seen any people or vehicles at the property between Thursday evening and late Sunday afternoon.
The back section of the house and several surrounding properties were cordoned off on Monday as police continued their scene examination. |
