Medical Imaging (Overview)

What is it?
Diagnostic medical radiation technologists (MRTs) work in radiology facilities where they carefully examine patients, taking into account the doctor’s comments, the patient’s physical condition and any previous examinations the patient may have had. Together, with a radiologist, the diagnostic MRT decides on the most appropriate procedure, which may be a general x-ray examination or a more specialised imaging technique like a mammogram, computerised tomography or ultrasound. The images taken by the diagnostic MRT are then studied by the radiologist, who will use them to make a diagnosis.


Medical Radiation Technology (MRT) has two branches – medical imaging and radiation therapy. Medical imaging (previously known as diagnostic radiography) plays a crucial role in healthcare. It uses a wide range of sophisticated equipment to help diagnose injury or disease, and to assist in patient management and treatment. Modern radiology departments include general x-ray procedures, as well as more specialist methods of imaging, like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, mammography and nuclear medicine. Radiation Therapy is the branch of MRT that treats patients who have cancer.
