Our decision on your application


I am pleased to tell you that we have approved your application for a student permit.


Your student permit


You have been issued with an electronic student permit. Once you have received your passport (2 -3 working days), you will find that it has been endorsed with a student visa label.


If your application was submitted by your education provider through the student’s online facility, you will need to contact your education provider after 2 – 3 working days for collection of your passport and student visa. Please note the expiry date of your student visa as this is also the expiry date of your permit.


It is important that you read and understand the conditions of your permit, including your permit expiry date and whether you are able to undertake employment in New Zealand.  Other conditions of a student permit include the requirements that you must attend your course of study and make satisfactory progress. If you fail to meet any of the conditions of your permit you may not be granted a further permit to stay.


While you are in New Zealand, you must hold a valid permit at all times. If you need to extend your permit, you must apply before your current permit expires, or you will be in New Zealand unlawfully. If you need to extend your stay, we encourage you to apply at least 30 days before the expiry date on your permit.


Conditions of your student permit


Your student permit will entitle you to study in New Zealand on the condition that you undertake study in the course, education provider and location endorsed on your permit.  Any change to these study conditions will require approval from Immigration New Zealand.  


Students who stop attending or withdraw from the course and/or education provider endorsed on their permit before obtaining a variation of conditions (or a further student permit) will be in breach of their permit conditions.  Applicants who breach their permit conditions may not ordinarily be granted further permits (or a variation of conditions) and may be liable to have their permit revoked and be required to leave New Zealand or be removed.
