A global campaign to woo building professionals to New Zealand is about to step it up a level.
LookSee Build, a recruitment programme backed by some of New Zealand's biggest construction companies, launched late last year to stem the country's critical shortfall of project managers, engineers and other building professionals.
After thousands of registrations, it brought out an initial 50 job candidates to New Zealand in February for a week of interviews and events.
Half have since found work, and next month LookSee will fly in another batch of candidates, this time with a particular emphasis on women in construction and engineering.
One successful candidate was project manager Louis Venter, who was working for South Africa's leading company in affordable housing.
He'd hit a ceiling in the organisation, and with family links in Australia, that country or New Zealand seemed like compatible places to live.
He applied for an Australian visa, but missed out because the age limit was 45 years and he'd just turned 46. Now happily ensconced in Auckland, he considers it a blessing in disguise.
"New Zealand was always my favourite," he says.
Venter came across the LookSee Build NZ programme by chance on the Internet, and was soon doing Skype interviews with prospective employers before flying out to see the lay of the land.
The programme not only connects potential candidates with employers but also pays successful job seeks up to $2000 towards their air fares, and helps with finding accommodation and navigating immigration.
"There's quite a lot of information that you would have to go onto the Internet or immigration to get, that they basically hand out on a plate."
