Honda Torneo tops most stolen car list

The top 10 cars most likely to be stolen are all Japanese models with the Honda Torneo topping the list.

It was the fourth consecutive year the Torneo had been the most frequently stolen car, AA Insurance says.

Data compiled from AA Insurance claims data showed 92 per cent of theft claims for vehicles on the list were for cars more than 10 years old. The average value was $5120.

Newer models tend to have more sophisticated security systems, but owners should not be complacent, customer relations manager Amelia Macandrew says.

Protective steps include installing an alarm, steering lock or visible immobiliser and always locking the doors even if it's parked in the garage.

"Thieves will always go for the easiest, fastest option, so if you make it just a little bit harder for them then chances are they'll lose interest in your car and move on to an easier target," Ms Mcandrew said.

New Zealand Police crime statistics report that there were about 49,000 motor vehicle thefts and related offences in 2014, a comparable number with the previous two years.
