as per their policy on page 27,
1. Lost, Stolen and Damaged Specified Items..... Proof of ownership, such as a receipt dated prior to the claimed event must be provided for all specified items.
Proof of ownership can be a bank statement, Manuel of the the stolen item, box of the item or receipt, it states on their policy "such as a receipt" but didn't say the other types of documents can't be use as proof.
Just call them again and tell them that you have sent the box with the serial number as you proof of ownership. I don't think they can refuse to pay your claim.
Speak to their senior or team leader or something.
If they are rejecting your claim by writing then you can take you case to ombudsman.
