By Annabelle Tukia
A badly injured Christchurch cyclist has met with the man who saved his life.
Tee Chek Tan was biking to work on a Friday morning last month when he got caught under a 22-wheeler truck. He's now out of hospital and was desperate to thank the man who came to his aid.
Mr Tan doesn't remember the last time he met Richard Mitchell, but he knows he owes him his life. Three weeks ago the 32-year-old was biking to work when he got caught under a 22-wheeler truck and dragged 30 metres.
Mr Mitchell was waiting in traffic and saw the accident unfold. He managed to alert the driver and then rush to Mr Tan's aid.
“I didn't want to look under the truck,” says Mr Mitchell to Mr Tan. “I didn't, but I'm pleased you were still talking and breathing when we did.”
Mr Tan doesn't recall any of the accident, but Mr Mitchell was able to fill in some of the blanks for him, saying he was stuck between two sets of wheels, with his leg stuck between the axles.
With multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung, Mr Tan was rushed to hospital and put in an induced coma for four days.
“I thought he was dead for sure,” says Mr Mitchell.
The 32-year-old got out of hospital this week and was determined to track Mr Mitchell down.
“I really wanted to thank him for saving my life,” says Mr Tan.
But he says his days of biking to work are now over.
