Highly sought attributes in Australia and New Zealand
Hiring managers are looking for talented individuals who
are willing to invest a number of years in the organisation.
Demand is greatest for mid-level management technology
professionals, who will not only bring technical and systems
experience to the organisation but who are also able to grow
with the company and eventually take on leadership roles.
Demand for senior and entry-level professionals is less strong
as there is a finite number of roles at these levels within the IT
space. Companies are being increasingly selective when hiring
those just starting their careers, since these professionals
require more supervision and are less apt at dealing with
fluctuating business needs. It is important however that
organisations fuel this lower level pipeline in order to develop
the business leaders of tomorrow.
Along with the requisite technical abilities, employers seek
candidates with strong communication skills, who can share
information effectively with business managers throughout
the organisation. Those who possess an ideal combination of
soft skills and technical experience are among the most highly
sought after professionals.
Technology and software skills in demand
Employers across Australia are looking for candidates who
have the following technology and software skills: .NET, web
development, SharePoint, Java, Windows 7, Citrix, VMWare
and Objective 6. In New Zealand companies are looking for IT
professionals with .NET skills with a focus on web services
and multi-tiered architecture, as well as those with Microsoft
Business Intelligence skills.
In Australia, project management credentials such as Prince2
remain valuable for technology professionals. MCTS, CDST,
CCNA and CCNP are also qualifications that employers seek.
In addition, New Zealand candidates with ITIL, CBAP, IIBA and
Agile / Scrum certifications are in demand.
Positions in demand
Demand for skilled professionals is strong in emerging areas
of IT as companies seek to address the requirements of ever
evolving technologies such as Windows 7, cloud computing,
.NET 4.0 and mobile applications development. Requirements
for IT positions may vary across industries and regions, but
demand for the following IT professionals remains high across
the board in both Australia and New Zealand:
Business Intelligence Professionals:
Firms need immediate
information that can help them move their business forward.
That’s why they seek business intelligence candidates who
can draw and make sense of increasing amounts of data from
various streams.
Business Analysts: Many businesses refocused their efforts
on business process improvement during 2011 and this has
led to an increase in demand for these professionals.
Managers rely on business analysts to liaise between
technology and the business.
Developers:
Those skilled in .NET, Java and SharePoint are in
demand.
IOS & Android Developers:
An increasing number of
organisations are looking for technology professionals with
experience in E-Commerce vehicles and, in particular, mobile
products. Developers with strong commercial experience are
increasingly sought after.
Systems Administrators:
Systems administrators with strong
technical knowledge of systems procedures and familiarity
with hardware and software are currently in high demand. |
