A carpet cleaner who faces criminal charges after being secretly filmed by a consumer television show performing an indecent sexual act has been given name suppression.

The man is charged with burglary and unlawfully accessing a computer after the producers of TV3's Target show handed police footage which showed the man sniffing underwear from a laundry basket and masturbating at the home of a client - a Target actress.

He was granted name suppression when he appeared in Manukau District Court on Wednesday, 3News reported.

The man was fired after his boss was shown the footage which aired on television on Tuesday night.

Within a few minutes of arriving at the client's home to clean carpet stains the man could be seen rifling through a laundry basket and sniffing several pairs of underwear.

He then looks through drawers, a wardrobe and inspects cupboards.

Host Carly Flynn warns: "The behaviour you're about to see is so extreme, so unprofessional, we're screening it as a cautionary tale, firstly, for home owners and, secondly, the tradespeople who think they can behave like this in clients' homes when they aren't there".

The man was shown kneeling in front of a computer and masturbating into underwear before throwing the soiled knickers back into the laundry basket.

In a statement to the programme his employer said the man had been immediately dismissed.

"Needless to say I am disgusted and shocked at the uncouth antics of the person caught on tape," the employer said.

"He fully deserves to be exposed for what he did while placed in a position of trust."

The man is due to reappear in court on June 6.
