Yahoo! New Zealand Business, On Tuesday 9 August 2011, 10:09 NZST

[size=1em]Up to 12 percent of young Kiwis could be driving around without insurance while 3 percent of drivers have falsely admitted they were driving a vehicle involved in an accident to protect the driver, according to the findings of a survey of car insurance providers.

[size=1em]The survey by Canstar Blue revealed that Gen Y drivers were more likely to let their car insurance lapse than older New Zealanders.

[size=1em]More than 2500 Kiwis were asked to rate their satisfaction with the car insurance provider they most recently dealt with.

[size=1em]"AA Insurance came out on top in three of the four categories we rated, including overall satisfaction They also shared the five star rating with Vero for clarity of policy and when it came to service, AA Insurance, Vero, AMI Insurance, BNZ and Westpac all received a five star rating," Canstar Cannex NZ national manager Derek Bonnar said.
[size=1em]AMI Insurance received five stars for price.
[size=1em]The survey found that along with Gen Y drivers, those living in Auckland are also the most likely to forget their car insurance with 10% of those surveyed citing financial or time pressures as being the reason they'd let their car insurance lapse
[size=1em]"91 percent of kiwis understand the difference between comprehensive and third party insurance — which indicates people have taken the time to understand their policy. However, on the flip side it also shows that 1 in 10 kiwis don't know the difference between the two types of insurance and may be driving around with the wrong insurance cover," Bonnar said.
[size=1em]Of those surveyed, 3 percent said they have falsely admitted they were the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident, to protect the driver. Auckland drivers were the most likely to stretch the truth when involved in an accident with 6 percent confessing to falsely being the driver.
[size=1em]Amongst those surveyed the most common gripes about car insurance providers include:
  • Price
  • Huge excesses, including excesses for under 25s
  • Cost of premiums
  • Premiums going up while valuations are going down
  • Getting in touch with customer service staff
  • Clarity of policy — people not understanding what they're covered for, or misunderstanding what they are covered for.
