This morning the Burns Wing was evacuated following advice from someone purporting to represent the Civil Defence. It appears that this was a hoax and is now a matter for police investigation. Nonetheless we carried out a full re-investigation of the structural integrity of the building.  We now have clearance from the structural engineers that the  Burns Wing can be re-occupied.

While we all are affected by the earthquake and anxious about safety, this situation has demonstrated that we need to be vigilant with any ‘official’ who communicates to any of us during this time. If deemed appropriate please check the identification of ‘officials’ and ask to see an official identity badge. If Civil Defence, for example, did come on to campus, they are likely to be in a branded vehicle and unlikely to be alone.
