The Government has decided to ban the use of handheld cellphones in cars.
Minister of Transport Steven Joyce says the new rule will take effect from November 1.
Those breaking the law will receive an $80 fine, as well as 20 demerit points on their drivers license.
Hands free devices will still be allowed and exemptions will be made for people making genuine 111 emergency calls.
The move is being driven by accident records, which show over a five year period there were over 500 crashes where cellphones were identified as a contributing factor. |
